If Your School Is Looking For...
Typical Request From Principals & Cultural Directors
1. An author/illustrator who does not simply lecture and read from their books - Lose interest of the kids

2. An author/illustrator who does not just come into the school to sell books for 45 minutes

3. An author/illustrator who can directly relate to each age group - on the children's level

"Mr. Shandrowski was unlike any other author that has visited our school (including authors from Scholastic, Random House etc).  Instead of merely talking about his craft lecture-style, he had a set with lights, music, and special effects to hold the students’ interest.  He adjusted his program for all students, thus both challenging and entertaining students from Kindergarten up to fifth grade.  The students and teachers loved his program not only for his message to use your imagination, but also for the creativity and “magic” that he used to entertain and engage.  I highly recommend the program to every school.  The children are still talking about it," Joanna Teodosio, Teacher/Cultural Arts Director - Calf Pen School, Milford CT

“Joe, your program was something very special.  We are so accustomed to author programs that are not age appropriate or authors who just visit to sell books.  It was so refreshing to experience a program that not only showed children the world of an author but also how important reading is. The program directly related to each age group and was animated, fun and definitely an experience the children will remember for years to come.  This is what enrichment programs should be all about," Teaching Staff – Daisy Ingraham School, Westbrook, CT

Act One (10 Minutes)

A. I will introduce myself to the students & my Huga Tuga "Wonder Series" of picture storybooks.

B. I will introduce Huga Tuga, the Magical Blue Sea Monster - Comic Fun!

Act Two (10 Minutes)

A. Cartoon Illustrating Segment - Creating an "IDEA"

  • The students and I will create a goofy cartoon character that resembles a pencil.  Why a pencil?  It is a valuable tool used by both an author and illustrator.  The students imagination begin to stir.

Act Three (10 Minutes)

A. The Wonder of Imagination.

  • I will show the students how a simple "idea" can be turned into something amazing if your imagination is strong enough.
  • Example: The students will "visually" experience how a page in the Huga Tuga & the Seashell Mystery storybook is created.  From the first word written to the final design.
  • Along the way the students will learn that it is ok to make mistakes and the more times you re-write a story the better it gets.

Act Four (10 minutes)
How It Began

Reading Fuels Our Imaginations

THE THEME OF THE HUGA TUGA CULTURAL ARTS EXPERIENCE

THE MORE BOOKS YOU READ - THE MORE YOU LEARN - THE MORE YOU LEARN THE STRONGER YOUR IMAGINATION WILL BECOME & THE BETTER CHANCE YOU HAVE OF TAKING A SIMPLE IDEA AND TURNING IT INTO SOMETHING AMAZING.

"If it were not for the love of reading Huga Tuga would have never come to life."

Final Act - Literary Theater (20 Minutes)
A. WOW! Instead of just reading a story together - The students and I will take a simple idea and turn it into something amazing.  We will perform a theatrical reading of Huga Tuga in the Seashell Mystery.  The program will be complete with the following:
